Review: Drowning Is Inevitable by Shalanda Stanley

Drowning Is Inevitable by Shalanda Stanley

Blurb from Goodreads:
Olivia has spent her whole life struggling to escape her dead mother’s shadow. But when her father can’t even look at her because Olivia reminds him of her mother, and her grandmother mistakenly calls her “Lillian,”  shaking a reputation she didn’t ask for is next to impossible. Olivia is used to leaning on her best friend, Jamie; her handsome but hot-tempered boyfriend, Max; and their wild-child friend, Maggie, for the reality check that her small Louisiana town can’t provide. But when a terrible fight between Jamie and his father turns deadly, all Olivia can think to do is grab her friends and run.

In a flash, Olivia, Jamie, Max, and Maggie become fugitives on the back roads of Louisiana. They’re headed to New Orleans, where they hope to find a solution to an unfixable problem. But with their faces displayed on all the news stations, their journey becomes a harrowing game of hide-and-seek from the police—and so-called allies, who just might be the real enemy.

Shalanda Stanley’s breathtaking debut novel explores the deep ties between legacy, loyalty, and love, even as it asks the question: How far would you go to save a friend?
My Review:

Drowning Is Inevitable was not for me.  I hate it when that happens to a book I've been as a WoW!  The most honest and first thing I can say about this book is that it was lacking a purpose, a message and a plot.  The beginning of the book was interesting but then it just felt like it went nowhere and everything, EVERYTHING in the book was so depressing.  It ended up with these naive teenagers just wandering around New Orleans to evade the police and getting caught up in drug deals.  I was waiting for some mystery or thriller aspect but everything happened in slow motion and I just felt bereft.  The only likable character for me was Jamie, Olivia's (the MC) best friend and without telling you what happens -- things did not end well for him.

Drowning Is Inevitable was just released this week, and you can purchase HERE!
Driving through the French Quarter was like entering a new dimension.  Everything had been restored to its pre-apocalyptic-hurricane state.  It was only noon, but people were already in the streets, wearing smiles and beads and carrying ridiculously tall drink cups.  It didn't feel real.  Somehow we had wandered into some play intended to convince the tourists that everything was back to normal.  The shop owners were in on it, with their too-wide smiles, pointing and directing everyone's attention away from anything real.

  1. Oh no! I hate when that happens with a book you are looking forward to. Not sure how I feel about a book with no plot or purpose . Sorry this one wasn't better for you. Great review though!

  3. Well, the guy who commented ahead of me is super confused- he had a much different experience with this book, one that compelled him to speak about God AND pharmaceuticals. As you do.

All jokes and spammers aside... yeah. I feel you. How did the drug deals even get in there? Like... HOW!? How did that even become a thing? I didn't mention it in my review because I didn't want to get to into the plot, but... what WAS that!? Sadness. I am so sorry that it didn't work out for you :(

I love this trope, sub-genre, setting: My Best Friend's Brother/My Brother's Best Friend

I Love This Trope, Sub-Genre, Setting is a new feature on my blog in which I discuss a trope, sub-genre or setting that I love and tell you about books that are shining examples of said trope, sub-genre or setting.  Feel free to play along and please let me know about your favorite books in this realm and whether you like this trope, sub-genre and/or setting as much as I do! Today I am spotlighting the trope of:  My Best Friend's Brother/My Brother's Best Friend , which I would define as any book where the heroine either has a crush on or falls for her brother's best friend or her best friend's brother. I have to confess that I love this trope in nearly all of its iterations!  I have a younger brother so I never got to crush on any of his friends but it's fun reading about that and it's equally as fun as reading about falling for your best friend's brother -- instant sisters!  I know there are a ton

Conversations With Myself (& Hopefully You): ARC Greed

This discussion is inspired by my feelings lately when reading and reviewing ARCs versus the feelings I had when I requested those same ARCs: ARC GREED ARC greed -- have we all experienced this?  What I even mean by this term is that I sometimes feel overwhelmed when looking at Netgalley and Edelweiss and  I sometimes over-request, if only because I can!  I get greedy when I see all the new and shiny ARCs available and I will sometimes request things that have even a hint of interest for me, not necessarily focusing only on those books that I really, really want.  The problem with this over-requesting and with getting greedy with requesting (and receiving) ARCs is when it comes time to read and review these ARCs.  Last month and this month, I have looked at my ARCs with a release date in each respective month and I just haven't wanted to read any of them.  I need to start asking myself -- If I was immediately approved for this ARC, would I read it right thi
