Review: Breath of Scandal by Sandra Brown

Blurb from Goodreads:
On a rainy Southern night, Jade Sperry endured a young woman's worst nightmare at the hands of three local hell-raisers. Robbed of her youthful ideals and at the center of scandal and tragedy, Jade ran as far and as fast as she could. But she never forgot the sleepy "company town" where every man, woman, and child was dependent on one wealthy family. And she never forgot their spoiled son, who, with his two friends, changed her life forever. Someday, somehow, she'd return, exact a just revenge -- and free herself from fear, and the powerful family that could destroy her.
My Review:

If you are in the mood for some old school romance with a side of revenge, you will love Breath of Scandal!!  This book originally came out in 1991 and it definitely is true to that time period in terms of attitudes and behavior, especially in the south.  Although things were a bit outdated, I couldn't help but love Jade Sperry -- she is a self-made woman, an amazing mother but she is also not over her past, which is completely understandable given what happened to her.  The book really was more about revenge rather romance but there was a slow build that made the eventual romance worth every page.

Breath of Scandal was just re-released, and you can purchase HERE!
There were those who had much to atone for, and Jade would see to it that they did.  The restitution she had dreamed of was within her grasp.  She now had the power to make it happen.
She continued to gaze out the window, but litter of the street scene below barely registered with her.  Rather, she saw the tall grass swaying in coastal marshes.  She smelled pungent salt air and heady magnolias.  She tasted low-country cooking.  The skyscrapers were replaced by tall pines; the broad avenues became sluggishly flowing channels.  She remembered how it felt to breathe air so heavy and thick that it didn't even stir the limp, gray Spanish moss that dripped from the branches of ancient live oaks.
She was going back to Palmetto.  And when she got there, all hell was going to break loose.

  1. I do agree, the views were definitely dated. I was eagerly awaiting the time when Jade would dish out some much deserved revenge after the despicable way she was treated in the beginning. Glad to see you enjoyed this one overall. Great review, Eva! :)

I love this trope, sub-genre, setting: My Best Friend's Brother/My Brother's Best Friend

I Love This Trope, Sub-Genre, Setting is a new feature on my blog in which I discuss a trope, sub-genre or setting that I love and tell you about books that are shining examples of said trope, sub-genre or setting.  Feel free to play along and please let me know about your favorite books in this realm and whether you like this trope, sub-genre and/or setting as much as I do! Today I am spotlighting the trope of:  My Best Friend's Brother/My Brother's Best Friend , which I would define as any book where the heroine either has a crush on or falls for her brother's best friend or her best friend's brother. I have to confess that I love this trope in nearly all of its iterations!  I have a younger brother so I never got to crush on any of his friends but it's fun reading about that and it's equally as fun as reading about falling for your best friend's brother -- instant sisters!  I know there are a ton

Conversations With Myself (& Hopefully You): ARC Greed

This discussion is inspired by my feelings lately when reading and reviewing ARCs versus the feelings I had when I requested those same ARCs: ARC GREED ARC greed -- have we all experienced this?  What I even mean by this term is that I sometimes feel overwhelmed when looking at Netgalley and Edelweiss and  I sometimes over-request, if only because I can!  I get greedy when I see all the new and shiny ARCs available and I will sometimes request things that have even a hint of interest for me, not necessarily focusing only on those books that I really, really want.  The problem with this over-requesting and with getting greedy with requesting (and receiving) ARCs is when it comes time to read and review these ARCs.  Last month and this month, I have looked at my ARCs with a release date in each respective month and I just haven't wanted to read any of them.  I need to start asking myself -- If I was immediately approved for this ARC, would I read it right thi
